SUNYATA DATONG
HOTEL
Across millennia in Fivefold Realms.
A narrative poem of a "Dream Journey Back to Pingcheng."

The hotel is situated in the southeastern part of Datong's ancient city. Its architecture continues the stylistic symbols of the core preservation zone of the ancient city, achieving a natural transition from tradition to modernity.

The divine light of the Yungang Grottoes, the artifacts of multi-ethnic integration, and the rhythmic beauty of the script of the Wei Stelae all serve as inexhaustible sources of inspiration for the project, transforming into warm and tangible cultural memories within the space. In designing the hotel interiors, CCD took "Dreaming Back to Pingcheng" as the core theme, meticulously crafting a "Fivefold Realms" spatial narrative system to guide guests into an immersive journey through the Northern Wei Dynasty.

REIMAGINING THE CULTURAL RHYTHMS OF NORTHERN SHANXI
/ GUESTROOM /
A modern reinterpretation of traditional living elements is evident throughout the guest rooms. CCD draws inspiration from the northern Chinese "Kang" (a heated platform), transforming it into a rest area that serves both functional and cultural symbolic purposes. In the newly constructed guest rooms, a low daybed by the window continues the kang’s social function; in the restored heritage guest rooms, the original earthen kang is preserved and adapted into a tea seating area.

Inside the guest rooms, the views framed by the window lattices change with the seasons, conveying the refined charm of courtyards in Northern Shanxi. The original architectural structures are fully exposed, yet enhanced with modern living amenities.
A TEXTURE HONED BY TIME
/ RESTAURANT & SWIMMING POOL /

The dining area draws inspiration from the banquet rituals of the Tang Dynasty, integrating the imperial aesthetics of Northern Shanxi to create a social space that balances a sense of ceremony with comfort. The spatial layout subtly reflects the hierarchical order of Shanxi’s traditional "five-courtyard progression," yet avoids rigid replication. The elegance of Jin-style imperial design is abstracted and modernized, woven into both the structural framework and decorative details.

The design of the swimming pool is subtly inspired by the concept of a "grotto heavens and blessed lands" from the Yungang Grottoes. Shimmering light and shadow play across the water surface and walls, evoking a mystical and tranquil atmosphere.
